Should we be scared of the Police?

Here is a little list of some things that scare me about the current state of policing in the UK.
Did we vote for this? Does anyone want this? Is it a conspiracy to turn the UK into a police state?

No, its a series of cock-ups by police, civil servants and politicians who just don't think things through.

Please don't scroll down if you are easily offended.

  1. I guess it's a mistake to attribute to malice what is more easily explained by stupidity, but is it really true that the civil servants and politicians aren't thinking things through? Don't they want to have this kind of power?

  2. It is said that all power corrupts - my feeling is that the first sense to be corrupted is vision. Cynic as I am, I really don't want to believe that people go into these jobs with world domination as their motivation, it just creeps up on them.

There is a very interesting discussion on this going on on Modern Liberty (http://www.modernliberty.net/2009/henry-porters-and-anthony-barnetts-views-on-what-next) at the moment.
